Muscovy is originally native to the Mexican, South/Central American region. Despite the name Muscovy; They were not introduced to Russia until they had already became known as the Muscovy. This is likely due to early ship trading of the bird by the nicknamed “Muscovite Company”. The Muscovy is the only domesticated duck specie not related to Mallard. Domestic Muscovy are the largest of all duck breeds with the males weighing in around 7-8KG whilst the largest recorded Muscovy was from an Australian breeder at 10KG, a mighty big bird! Some call the Muscovy “The Quackless duck” due to their quiet nature, although all Muscovy have the ability to “Quack” they tend not to, the males usually communicate via hissing and using body movements whilst the females have a variety of sweet soft whistling sounds that they make. Generally when a Muscovy only quacks if it is being attacked.. e.g. someone’s dog is in your yard attacking them. Otherwise they are a very quiet bird indeed. Muscovy’s only predators around here are foxes, dogs and when they are small ducklings, cats. Drakes will protect and die for the flock and females are extremely protective of freshly hatched ducklings. Other then the predators, Muscovy are a very hardy breed that has a wide varied omnivorous pallet that will eat just about any bug that moves, flies or slithers I have even seen mine eating brown snakes!
Muscovy make great pets if you bind them to you from young, they all have unique personalities and are extremely loyal and intelligent to the point I had “Rubber” trained not to poop on you whilst he was being held, come when he was called and taught the word “Gentle” if he got a bit rough whilst playing. He was one of my best friends ever.
Domesticated Muscovy can live up to 20 years when looked after and protected from predators. Ducks can lay up to 3 times a year but around here we only get two lays per year; one in Summer and another in Winter. They will usually hatch up to 20 ducklings when left to brood or if your inclined their eggs are absolutely lovely to eat, tasting like chicken eggs but being much larger and a larger yoke ratio which makes them awesome for cakes and dipping soldiers.
